Former police station could become retirement apartments

01/02/2021 by Digital Media

Plans have been revealed to transform a former police station in West Bridgford into retirement apartments.

Police are in talks with developers McCarthy Stone over the future of the former police station building located on Rectory Road.

Officers who were based there moved into a shared base with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service in Loughborough Road, West Bridgford, in September last year.

A consultation has launched ahead of plans being put forward by the developer to revamp the old station.

A letter, sent out by McCarthy Stone, revealed an ambition for a “retirement living scheme”.

The letter confirms the company has “recently acquired an interest” in the site and adds: “We believe the site is ideally located to provide specialist accommodation for older people, within close walking distance to local shops and services.

“We are in the early stages of designing up our proposals for the site’s redevelopment with a new retirement living scheme, together with attractive new landscaping and car parking.

“We are committed to meaningful community engagement regarding this proposal and have commenced a pre-application consultation programme.”

The consultation is designed to inform local people about the proposals.

Matt Wills, McCarthy Stone’s Midlands divisional managing director, said: “We are keen to develop a scheme that positively contributes to the local community through a high-quality, attractive design.

“We will therefore be involving the local community throughout the planning application process as we believe it is vital for local people to be given the opportunity to offer their feedback.”

New officers will continue to be trained at the site until the sale is completed.

Chief Constable Craig Guildford, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are pleased with the progress of the sale of the old police station in West Bridgford.

“The force is committed to providing a quality service to the public including investing in frontline policing and working with partner agencies to keep people safe.

Paddy Tipping, Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, added: “We have always believed that it’s important to invest in people rather than buildings.

“The former police station has been marketed hard and we’re delighted at the price received. There is a new police station on Loughborough Road, co-located with the fire and rescue service, and a front counter in the centre of West Bridgford run with Rushcliffe Borough Council.

“The sale represents a substantial capital receipt which will be invested in frontline policing.”

The relocation followed similar co-locations between the police and fire service, at the Highfields and London Road fire stations, and also at Carlton and East Leake where the police have contact points for the public.
