Rushcliffe Arena fitness instructor, Gil Maguire, and a group of gym members are organising a challenging ‘spinathon’, which will see more than 50 intrepid spinners take part in four hours of high energy, high-intensity indoor cycling in aid of Ocumel UK and The Friary.
In 2018, the spinners held a similar event and raised over £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Following on from the success of that event, they will be aiming to raise a similar sum, which will be split equally between the two charities.
The group has decided to choose the West Bridgford-based charity, The Friary, as they feel that it is an excellent opportunity to get involved in assisting those people who are living in poverty locally.
“The Friary does incredible work,” said Gil. “Even for a brief time, it’s a refuge that offers a sense of community and place.”
The other chosen charity, Ocumel UK, supports a cause that is very close to Gil’s heart, as he explained, “Last year, I lost a very dear family member to ocular melanoma (a type of eye cancer). The care and support she received from Ocumel UK was wonderful, but they are a small team, running on very limited resources. I thought a spinathon would be the perfect way to turn this tragedy into something positive and raise some vital funds for them.”
The Spinathon will be at the Rushcliffe Arena on Saturday 28th March.
