The speaker at the East Leake WI November meeting was Helen Cox, who gave a talk and video demonstration on the ‘Art of Pyrography’. This is a technique using heat to create designs on wood.
Helen explained that her background is in science and would not class herself as an artist. When the Covid lockdown occurred she looked for something to fill her time. Having tried jigsaws and origami she felt she needed something more challenging, so tried Pyrography and became ‘hooked’. She explained the processes involved and the different equipment needed to produce the artwork.
Helen brought some of her work to share with us and, although she might not class herself as an artist, her work is very impressive.
Helen very kindly presented us with a plaque made using the techniques she had
demonstrated.
Our activities this month have included an evening meal at The Bull’s Head, East Leake, and coffee and cake at Notcutts Garden Centre.
Over refreshments there was the chance to sign up for this month’s activities and events and socialise with one another.
The next monthly meeting is on Tuesday 9th December in the Village Hall on Main Street when we will be holding our annual Christmas activities. Our first meeting in 2026 is Tuesday 13th January when our speaker is Steve West who will be telling us all about’ The Stammering Toastmaster’.
The groups full programme of speakers is available on our page on the Village website https:/east-leake.co.uk/east-leake-womens-institute/ or look out for our posters on the village noticeboards and outside the library.
New to the village or been here a while? Why not come along as a visitor, enjoy a pleasant evening and join in and find out more about us. We offer a warm welcome to a range of events and activities with fun and friendship.
