Our September meeting started with a minutes silence being observed as a mark of thanks and respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a WI member for over 70 years and the ultimate inspiring woman.
A tribute from East Leake WI has been entered in the National WI book of condolence and members were encouraged to contribute individually if they wish.
Our ladies have enjoyed a busy few weeks of events and activities, the highlight being our much anticipated Afternoon Tea Cruise on the River Trent when twenty members set sail in the beautiful summer sunshine.
An interesting commentary from the captain, good company and the usual debate about whether the jam or cream is spread first on the scones made for a very enjoyable afternoon.
Most recently, we were delighted to welcome our members and two new visitors to our monthly meeting when Jo Gilby’s wonderful talk about “The Life of a Ladies’ Maid” took us back to the very early Edwardian era and had us all fascinated and amused. We were treated to the scandalous gossip of the day, how an eighteen inch waist was achieved (not to be tried at home!) and the language of fans, from the viewpoint of own costumed Ladies Maid who remained delightfully in character.
Our activities this month include a trip to see “The Mousetrap” which is returning to where it started, in Nottingham, to mark its 70 year anniversary.
We will also be visiting Charnwood Museum followed by a walk in the grounds and refreshments, lunching at The Ruddington Arms and going out for coffee at Antlers at Manor Farm.
Our next monthly meeting is on Tuesday 11th October at 7.30 pm in the village hall on Main Street when we will be welcoming Revd Canon Alan Haydock for “Confessions of a Country Vicar”
