John Shelton of Clifton began litter picking earlier this year as a way to help keep the local streets clean. He also often gets together with other local litter pickers or members of Alma Davies’ Clean Champions to do a sweep of certain areas. Here John talks about his experience and why he thinks being a local Clean Champ is important:
“This past summer prompted me to start litter picking. It was Lockdown and I was just walking down the Grove area around Clifton. It was being left in a state by others who were just dropping rubbish and leaving it behind.
“I often pick up some of the litter off my own accord as it is quite peaceful to do.
“I know that Alma Davies is in charge of NG11 Clifton Area. I really admire what she has been doing. Some other litter pickers I know as well as my parents live on Barton Green, so places like The Grove hold good memories for myself and others. I just don’t want to see it overrun by empty beer cans, glass bottles and discarded litter.
“It’s just good for mental health as well, to keep the area tidy for generations to enjoy and it’s a community thing. It’s also a great excuse to get outside and be within nature whilst keeping the area litter free.
“Please contact your local council if you see a bin overflowing or any fly-tipping! The environment is there for us all to enjoy and be safe in.”
