Every January a group in Calverton performs an age-old play in local pubs to raise money for charity.
The Calverton Plough Play, a time-honoured and much-revered tradition, is usually performed in pubs around the borough by the Calverton Real Ale and Plough Play Preservation Society (CRAPPPS).
The performance of a Plough play is believed to have started in Nottinghamshire around the 17th century and was organised by ploughmen to mark the start of the agriculture year following Christmas.
However due to the pandemic and lockdown restrictions, all the pubs are currently closed. So, this year the came together over Zoom and performed the play during a live stream on Youtube. The performance took place at 8:30pm on January 16 and it’s still available to be viewed online here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4JVdnjxD3I
The CRAPPPS group has performed a Plough Play every year since 1978, so far raising more than an astonishing £26K for Nottinghamshire NSPCC in the process.
