Award winning travel writer Elizabeth Gowing has recently released a new book titled Unlikely Positions in Unlikely Places: a yoga journey around Britain. In this book, Elizabeth tells her tale of her yoga adventures across Britain, the characters she meets along the way and the current of this shared experience that runs quietly through British society.
In chapter 3, Elizabeth whimsically recalls her encounter with a one on one yoga lesson on board a small paddle board (which she likens to “…a piece of toast kept afloat by chance before the ducks got it…”) afloat on a Nottingham lake.
As Elizabeth reluctantly balances herself aboard the paddleboard and tries to steady herself into a compromising yoga position, her instructor asks her to check if she is storing tension, Elizabeth’s inner monologue responds; “Tension? Of course I’m storing flipping tension! I’m trying to keep dry on a tiny bit of Styrofoam in the middle of a lake…”.

She of course manages to complete her lesson, even with her struggle of an encounter floating into a willow tree mid-stretch.
This book is the story of ancient wisdom solving modern-day problems, follow Elizabeth Gowings gentle wit and her genuine (and infectious) interest in her journey in completing her yoga voyage around Britain whilst coming across a whole host of characters and experiences. Unlikely Positions in Unlikely Places is available on amazon, kindle and audio.
