Passionate allotment gardeners from across the Borough got involved in Broxtowe’s all-new allotment competition.
To celebrate the allotment gardeners working all year round to grow sustainable produce in Broxtowe, our inaugural ‘Best Allotment’ competition took place in August 2025.
Allotments are an important part of communities across the Borough, and this competition looked to shine a light on those who have achieved great things on their patch. Across the 12 entries, it was clear to see the pride people took in the spaces they had created, a heartwarming display of how hard work and dedication can be rewarded.
The competition was judged by the Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Robert Bullock, and the Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, Councillor Helen Skinner. They assessed the entries on factors including:
- Area cultivated
• Variety and quality of crops
• Good husbandry
• Biodiversity
• Sustainability
• Good housekeeping
• Recreational use
After much deliberation, the main prize was given to John and Mary Yianni (left) for their stunning efforts on plot 8 and 9 at Grove Avenue Allotments in Chilwell. A runner up prize was given to Anthony and Sarah Wright (below) from plot 17 at the same site, with the Mayor’s Award for Best Newcomer going to Sam Arumugum (bottom right) from Borehole Allotments in Beeston.
Speaking about the competition, Councillor Robert Bullock said: “It was an honour to judge this competition and see firsthand the work of all the entries. Allotments are an important part of many people’s lives.
“They help to create a sense of community and pride in the local area, and are a great way to get active and spend more time in nature.
“I was incredibly impressed by all the entries. The skill, dedication, and passion shown to create such wonderful spaces filled with great produce made it very hard to pick a favourite. Thank you to all the people that took part and congratulations to John and Mary on winning!”
