Beeston’s skyline is changing with the construction of the lift shafts at Beeston Station. These are now very visible from Station Road bridge.
The prefabricated lift structures were erected in August and are now becoming part of the changing landscape of the Station. Both sets of stairs have also been put in place.
With the lifts shafts, the location of Beeston Station is now obvious. This overcomes a long-standing difficulty for those unsure about where the Station is and how to get to it!
Story, the contractors working on behalf of Network Rail, are pleased with the work so far. Tom Weeks, the Project Manager said, ‘we’re very happy with the construction. The overnight road closures, which allowed the cranes to put in place the lift shafts and the stairs, allowed us the space to do the work and all went well, but there is still a lot of work to do to complete it,’ he said.
Trish Roberts-Thomson, Chair of Friends of Beeston Station, said that FOBS has been taking a great interest in the building of the lifts and are delighted with the progress so far. When it’s finished it will be great for the Station and will allow for so many more people to use it,’ she said.
‘There’s still a way to go but there is now real progress,’ she said. ‘We just hope that everyone using the Station now can be patient and prepared for the long walk when changing platforms. This is only for a few more months.’
The mechanics of the lifts will be constructed on site and the lifts are expected to be in operation before the end of the year.
FOBS in the meantime continues to maintain the Station with colourful planters, gardening and litter picking.
