Depending on how much you know about the climate crisis, you may have found yourself wanting to shout from the rooftops: “Buy second hand! Switch to renewable energy! Buy locally grown fruit & veg! Support ethical companies! Reduce meat & dairy consumption! Avoid single-use plastic! Don’t fly or use your car unless necessary! Pressure your MP! Donate to environmental charities!” The list goes on…
But it turns out this doesn’t really work. Telling people what to do can often push people away and some of these things aren’t possible or practical for everyone, especially in our current system.
So, what do we do? Give in to apathy? Feel hopeless? Do nothing? System change is vital, but the public needs to drive this change, so we need to become the change we want to see and leading by example is one of the best ways to bring about cultural change.
As you become more aware of how dependent we are on the natural world, you naturally start to see some of the flaws with our current culture and want to become part of the solution, rather than the problem.
Living with less is actually hugely liberating and changing our behaviour feels really great too – there are so many things we can do to help. We’re all in this together; it’s a wonderful opportunity to create a greener, healthier, more mindful society.
