A charity dinner and cabaret event held at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground in February raised £10,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity.
The successful fundraising event was organised by Rushcliffe resident Eileen Haselden who founded Together We Can For Dementia, supported by her trustees Alan and Janice Hill. Over 6 years, Together We Can For Dementia has raised £40,000 for a range of dementia charities, with this most recent donation of £10,000 supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK.
As well as a percentage of ticket sales, money for Alzheimer’s Research UK was raised by a raffle, auction, and activities throughout the event.
Eileen was inspired by her husband, John, a former pro footballer who was diagnosed with dementia in 2013 and sadly passed away in March this year.
Eileen said:
“I just want to give people hope that a cure can be found for these diseases that cause dementia. Research has been so underfunded for far too long and I want to make a difference. I feel that this is what our life is for.
I believe that ‘together we can’.”
Eileen handed over a cheque for £10,000 to Naomi Walters, Regional Fundraising Officer, on Thursday 20th August. She also raises money on an ongoing basis by selling homemade crafts and ‘teddy bear adoptions’ – sending adopted teddy bears all over the British Isles.
Alzheimer’s Research UK powers world class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia. There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this number is expected to rise to over 1 million by 2025.

Naomi Walters, Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:
“We’re so grateful to Eileen for supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK. Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population – one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition. Fantastic fundraising efforts like this will help us to make life-changing research breakthroughs for people with dementia.”
