Henry Whipple Primary School in Nottingham have come up with a colourful way to brighten up their school and spread positivity in the area ready for the start of the next school year.

The school, located in the heart of Bestwood, came up with their new initiative during the Covid-19 lockdown. The idea was to invite their school children and parents to come and paint part of the school fence and add their names to form a memory rainbow walk which will celebrate the community in lockdown and mark the event in a positive way.
Like many other schools across the country, they were forced to close due to the lockdown but the teachers kept busy by providing online learning, calling their parents every week and even doing social isolated visits.

Believe, Belong, Achieve – these are the school’s key values to encourage the children to believe in themselves and aspire to achieve more. The rainbow walk will reflect these values and spread positivity throughout the local community.
Head Teacher Cari Burgess said, “Our community is a strong community and one which we are proud of.
“Keeping us together has been the most important thing for us during this challenging time for us all.
“Like other schools, we have been providing online learning, phoning all our parents every week and visiting many of them, creating videos of the staff and our families at home learning, sending cards and more.

“Our school is the focal point so I wanted to do something to reflect that and also create something that would be a physical reminder of this time wrapped up in a positive experience that would further support the already extensive work we do on mental health.
“What better way than coming back to school, seeing other families (social distancing of course) and doing some painting, then writing your name as a permanent reminder that we at HWP belong and can still be together at this time and do something positive.

“In September, this is one of our main entrances so I hope, as everyone does, that the rainbow walk will bring a smile and the memory that they are part of something special here at HWP.”
