A successful women’s football team has been forced to close because of a lack of players and management to take the team forward into the new season.
The team, which was associated with the West Bridgford Colts football organisaton based at Regatta Way in Gamston, had been competing in women’s senior football for 15 years
Former manager Martin Dawkins, who started the ladies section in 2000, was disappointed to hear the news. He said: “I was advised by the East Midlands Women’s Football League that the team would not be carrying on and, to be honest, I think that is a real shame
“It took a lot of hard work by many dedicated people to set the team up and keep it running and to learn of its demise is disappointing to say the least.”
Over the years, West Bridgford attracted many top players including Julie Mitchell, Katy Lemon, Katie Holtham and Beth Johnson, who have all represented England Women at various age groups.
