It has been a very busy few months for the horses and riders from Wenlo Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) group who have taken part in regional competitions, with many riders qualifying to compete in the RDA National Championships.
Four riders from the group, which is based at Meadow School of Riding in Normanton-on-Soar, took part in the Riding for the Disabled Association Regional Dressage Qualifiers, held at Scropton RDA.
Wenlo riders Jonathon Rigby, Stephen Green and Kirsty Laing, plus Jackie Smeeton who rides as an independent rider under the Wenlo banner, all finished first or second in their respective classes and have qualified for the RDA National Championships.
Ten Wenlo riders – Luc Douherty, Elsie Johnstone, Emma Stone, Wyatt Whelband, Paul Collet, Antony Whelband, Leon Douherty, Liam Mahoney, Stephen Green and Kirsty Laing – took part in the North Midlands Countryside Challenge.
All 10 riders put in fantastic performances, with Luc, Paul, Antony, Leon, Liam, Stephen and Kirsty qualifying for National finals.
Additionally, South Notts RDA rider Philip Brothers competed in the Countryside Challenge competition riding Wenlo’s horse Charlie, also qualifying for Nationals.
RDA also runs an arts and crafts competition as part of the National Championships.
Open to all participants of all ages in RDA, it gives everyone a chance to take part in the RDA National Championships in some way, and to achieve recognition.
Wenlo’s Harry Wordsmith came second in the class to “paint a picture relevant to RDA”.
The RDA National Championships will take place Hartpury College in Gloucestershire on 12-14 July.
The club said: “We are so proud of all our riders and horses who took part in the regional qualifiers, and also of our volunteers for their tireless support both on competition day and during the preparations for the events.
“We are now looking forward to travelling to Gloucestershire for the National Championships. Transporting horses – and riders – to Gloucestershire for three days is a big – and very expensive undertaking for a small charity like ours.”
