The shopping habits of some residents in Rushcliffe could be set to change after a new Waitrose store was given the green light to be built in Edwalton. The store is set to be constructed just off Melton Road on land adjacent to Wheatcroft Garden Centre. Rushcliffe Borough Council have backed the plans and they have also been given government approval. Waitrose spokesperson, Simon Hoare, said: “It’s fantastic that we can get on building this new store which people in the area would like to see happen.”
The scheme, however, does not have full support from the area and some traders in West Bridgford have expressed concern.
Jonathan Hyman, who owns The Fruit Basket on Gordon Road, said: “What I want to know is how does the council plan to keep the independent shops in West Bridgford alive if this supermarket opens? We already have an Asda and a Morrisons in the vicinity and a Sainsbury’s coming in Wilford Lane. The bars and cafes in West Bridgford are booming, which is great, but the life of the shops on the high street needs protecting by the council.”
