Tuesday 25th August 2015 is a very momentous day in Clifton as the first fare-paying passengers boarded Nottingham’s newly-opened tram extension.
The 6:02am tram from the new Clifton Park & Ride site was full of commuters, dignitaries, tram enthusiasts and people just keen to see what the new line was all about.
As well as the line to Clifton via The Meadows and Compton Acres, the line to Chilwell and Beeston also opened today.
The media were also out in force and BBC Radio Nottingham presented their three-hour breakfast show from locations in Clifton and Beeston – and even on the tramsthemselves.
The £570m project has bit hit by delays and it led to frustration amongst some in Clifton, but the line is up and running and so far on day one has reported no delays.
NET marketing manager, Jamie Swift, said: “It is like Christmas Day, it is very special and it is fantastic day for Nottingham.
“A lot of hard work has gone into getting us to where we are now and I hope the local people like what they see.”
One Clifton commuter said: “I work at Phoenix Park so this will make my commute into work so much easier.”
The new tram lines have a total of 11 miles of new track and 28 stations and it is estimated the network will now carry around 23 million passengers a year.
