Nottingham Kayak Club had a strong showing in Royal Leamington Spa, across all abilities. Racing over 12 miles were the fastest paddlers of the day. Zyggy Chmiel and Nicky Cresser have been training hard over the winter and it showed.
After a hard race, Zyggy took first place and Nicky came in second. Nicky achieved the promotion he’d been looking for and will now compete in the fastest division. Ricky Millar also had a good race, finishing fourth. In the second race over 12 miles, Jakub Sliwa paddled hard to take fifth place.
The doubles race over 12 miles saw the partnership of Dave Belbin & Alison Chmiel take second place, with fellow club paddlers Pete Ilett & Chris Carter paddling well to take third place.
The four-mile course saw a large number of Nottingham paddlers taking to the water. Racing in doubles were Kath and Mick Nadal, continuing their usual form to take second place on a course with six turns.
The fastest single boat races over four miles saw junior Ellie Burgess storm away from the competition to take first place and promotion to a higher division, with Dave Hadley not far behind in third place. Juniors Stan Chmiel and Imogen Burgess coped well with the choppy conditions to finish 10th and 11th.
Also racing over four miles were Jacob Hubner and Catherine Lineker, who took third and fourth place respectively and gained promotion. In the slowest four-mile race, newcomer Heidi Unwin had a brilliant race, finishing third and also being promoted. Sarah Millest, racing in canoe, survived the choppy water to finish sixth, but first canoe.
