West Bridgford Hockey Club beat Melton in the Mixed 7s Hockey final at Highfields Sports Centre, having taken three points from hosts Players HC in a 2-0 win in their first game of the evening to make the play-off for first and second place.
Melton had led the competition right from the start of the four-session series without losing a single game and were in no mood to give it all away at the last minute.
Of the other seven teams competing, Bridgford had fought their way up from mid-table over their previous three games and their growing confidence guaranteed an exciting finale.
The final played out with neither team managing to score in normal time in a closely contested, nail-biting match, which saw a great Melton goal disallowed for a technical (5 metre) infringement and some amazing attack and defending at both ends.
Honours were decided in the end in an incredibly closely fought penalty shootout. The result was still undecided after the first set of penalty flicks, and Bridgford won on the second run-through following some great saves from both keepers, but some devastating shots – particularly from Bridgford – sealing the win for them.
Mick Hart, from West Bridgford Hockey Club, said: “Finally some silverware for West Bridgford after what has been a tough season and the first-ever series victory for their mixed 7s team.
To everone who played in the four-session series, well done ladies, gentlemen and juniors. And a big thanks to Players Hockey Club for organising what has been a great competition.”
