A total of 120 pupils from three Nottingham academies were joined by top coaches from Leicester Tigers Rugby Club for a day of specialist training in Arnold.
Boys and girls from Arnold Hill Academy, Farnborough Academy in Clifton and Rushcliffe School in West Bridgford – all part of the Trent Academies Group – spent a day engaging with the coaches finding out more about techniques, fitness, diet and even sleeping patterns.
CEO of the Trent Academies Group, Phil Crompton, said “It’s the second year we’ve done this and it brings an important extra dimension to school life.
“Some of the pupils are already playing club rugby, others are beginners. The more experience of different sports a young person can have the better.”
Peter Smith, of the Farnborough Academy, who initiated the connection, said: “When I found out the Tigers were willing to help I snatched their hand off.
“Offers like that don’t come up too often. I saw young people finding skills they didn’t know they had. I hope rugby can bring them as much pleasure as it’s brought me.”
Farnborough pupil, Mahmood Alhadad, said: “The Leicester Tigers coaches were really helpful helping me with the laws of the game and how to respect the people in charge.”
Lexie Freason added: “This is great. I have learnt so much about what I can do playing rugby.”
