NHS Blood and Transplant has worked with Nottingham Trent University over the past 18 months to collect 1,000 pints of blood from university students and staff, helping to save up to 3,000 lives.
The rolling campaign titled ‘The 1,000 Pint Challenge’ has been a partnership between Nottingham Trent University and Nottingham Donor Centre to encourage new donors to donate blood throughout the academic year.
NHS Blood and Transplant always needs new donors to save and improve lives and each donation can save or improve the lives of up to three adults or six children. Each donation is 470 mls, just under one pint.
Nationally around 200,000 new blood donors are needed each year to replace those who can no longer donate and in Nottingham 2,783 new donors were needed for 2018-2019.
Dan Stendall, Nottingham Donor Centre Manager said: “We are very grateful to the staff and students at Nottingham Trent University for donating blood and helping us exceed our target and reach 1,009 donations.
“Nottingham Donor Centre boasts a central location, ideally situated for university students and city centre workers.
“Facilities include free Wi-Fi, bus, tram and train stops close by, free refreshments and a bright, modern and relaxed environment. The centre also has evening and weekend appointments, so it’s a great place to make your first donation.
“We try to recruit new young, blood donors so they can become loyal and long-term donors. Giving blood is quick and easy and you will feel amazing afterwards.”
Paul Dodsley, Student Health Development Officer said, “The 1000 Pint Challenge was developed from an idea an academic had at Nottingham Trent University.
“We are extremely proud to be the first university in the UK to achieve this, our goal was to instil the importance of donating blood regularly to all our colleagues and students.
“It’s amazing so many people have supported the challenge and helped to save many lives in the process, and we hope to continue donating many more thousands of pints as a university.”
The campaign can be followed on social media with the hashtag #NTU1kChallenge.
