West Bridgford Rugby Club recently started a new girls’ only tag rugby section for Years 4, 5 and 6.
Caroline Towndrow coached an after-school club for girls’ only tag rugby at Abbey Road Primary School.
The girls enjoyed it so much that they asked her to start a team within the rugby club so they could continue playing.
The girls’ tag section has been going for over a month now and numbers are still continuing to grow.
A big welcome is always made to new players to ensure that they feel at home and ready to make new friends.
The sessions include lots of small games to help the girls sharpen the different skills needed for the game; passing, catching, running, decision-making, evading and co-ordination.
They then put all their new skills into a great game of tag. But the main aim is that the team lives up to the catchphrase of the rest of West Bridgford RFC, which is ‘We aim to enjoy what we do, win when we can, but at all times, have fun’.
West Bridgford RFC has recently completed the refurbishment of its clubhouse so hot drinks and food are available for parents and supporters.
Tag rugby is a nin-contact form of the rugby where each player wears a belt that has two velcro tags. Attacking players attempt to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball while defenders attempt to prevent them scoring by tagging.
The training sessions are on Sundays, 12:15pm meet for a 12:30pm start at West Bridgford RFC, The Memorial Ground, Stamford Road, West Bridgford, NG2 6GF.
