Radcliffe-on-Trent youngster Oliver Smith has been crowned the 2015 Minimax Champion at South Yorkshire Kart Club.
His dad, Stuart Smith, told the Local News: “Oliver has been interested in motorsport since the age of three and has been involved in karting since he was just five years old.
“He has celebrated great success in recent years, despite a very small budget and limited experience. Right from the outset, it was clear that Oliver had talent, winning several trophies and medals in the Bambino and Cadet classes.”
His 2015 season started well, securing first place in the Minimax class at South Yorkshire Kart Club’s Winter Championships in February.
The talented youngster then followed this up with back-to-back wins in June and July.
Oliver also secured five podium finishes during the season to be crowned the 2015 champion in December. Along the way, he has been supported by dad, Stuart, who works as his mechanic.
He continued: “Karting is an expensive sport to be involved in, so we have had to be very selective about which races we entered Oliver into. But this year we decided to make a real effort to gain sponsorship, which we did from Avant Homes.
“Thanks to this very generous offer from Avant Homes, we were able to do more testing days, buy tyres more often and not worry about the financial side of things. I have no doubt that this enabled Oliver to purely focus in his driving and this resulted in him winning the championship.”
Avant Homes will continue their support in 2016 and Oliver will be racing with the support of Mark Baines Motorsport – one of the UK’s leading Minimax kart racing teams.
Oliver will be racing in the Trent Valley Kart Club Championship and will enter the Northern Karting Federation (NKF) championship. This championship sees competitors racing over eight rounds.
Avant Homes’ chief executive officer, Colin Lewis said: “When we heard about Oliver’s ambitions, we were delighted to be able to support his efforts. Oliver is a highly talented young man and we wish him all the best in his quest to maybe one day become a professional racing driver.”
Headquartered at junction 30 of the M1, Avant Homes is one of the leading private developers of residential property in the UK. The company has four regional offices in Scotland, the north east of England, Yorkshire and the Midlands.
