Although, at the time of writing, the weather has not lived up to last year’s standard, the junior section of the club continues to flourish, with upwards of 90 boys and girls aged between five and 13 signed up for a summer of cricket.
The hard-ballers have made a fantastic start with the U11 and U13 sides winning both their opening two games, whilst the Under-10s, a mix of girls and boys which is brilliant to see, lost their first game.
However, they bounced back with a win against Caythorpe, whose senior side play in the Nottinghamshire Premier League. No mean scalp!
Individually, there have been standout performances too. Hat-tricks at any level of cricket are rare but we had two in the space of two days from Leo Williamson and Joe Lincoln.
Congratulations also must go to Sam Lincoln, who has been selected to play for the under-12 sub county side.
At senior level, a positive start has been made by both sides, with the first team having won three, lost one and a cancellation, whilst the second team have fared just as well, winning three from four.
A long way to go yet but fingers crossed for continued successes.
Sunday cricket has started where it left off last year with a win but, just as importantly, a most enjoyable game against a Gedling Colliery side of matched abilities.
Suffice to say that the average ages of both sides was no more than 16, with contributions from five father and son combinations.
Off the field, the club celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion a number of events have or are being organised as indicated below…
Sunday 7th July: A Calverton side v an MCC side
Wednesday 10th July: A Calverton side v Jason Gillespie Australian touring team
Saturday 21st September: Golf tournament at Norwood Park GC
Saturday 28th September: Sportsmen’s Evening hosted by David Bracegirdle from BBC Radio Nottingham with Ryan Sidebottom, ex-Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and England as guest speaker
