Tony Moss, a resident of Chilwell, has been awarded a residency for the whole of December at the prestigious 18th Street Arts Centre in Santa Monica, California.
This includes a studio, accommodation and support from staff, other artists plus contact with curators and local gallery owners.
Tony was born in Nottingham and has recently moved with his wife from Sutton-in-Ashfield.
After retiring from a life-long career in social work, he embarked on a part time Fine Art Degree course at Nottingham University. He graduated in 2014.
Since that time he has been successful in getting works accepted in a number of open exhibitions, both locally and further afield.
He has also had stands at a number of art fairs, including Patchings (Calverton), Art in the Gardens (Sheffield) and Art& (York). He works in a studio at the rear of his home in Chilwell.
Tony’s art is inspired by architecture both urban and industrial, much of it seen on his travels. He describes his work as “modern but with a contemporary twist”. He mainly paints with acrylics on canvas, but occasionally works in a three-dimensional mode.
More recently, Tony has been successful in obtaining commissions from both private and commercial clients. He also enjoys undertaking demonstration work at local clubs, societies or educational institutions.
Tony describes the forthcoming residency as “an opportunity of a lifetime”.
He says that it is an exciting but daunting prospect.
However, given his interest in modernist architecture it will be like a dream come true working in the Californian environment.
He hopes that he will return to the UK, primed to produce a body of work based on his experiences and practice in Santa Monica.
Examples of his work can be seen on his website at email@example.com. He also currently has paintings and prints on exhibition at the Mish Mash Gallery, Chilwell.
