Reckon you’re green fingered? Think you know your parsnips? Are your Dahlias and Chrysanthemums the talk of your street?
Why not have a bit of fun and put your own lovingly-tended crops to the test.
Now in its 117th year, the West Bridgford and Rushcliffe Horticultural Society Show is the annual highlight for all its members, but you don’t have to be a member in order to take part, win cash prizes and maybe even a trophy.
This year’s event takes place on Saturday 31st August from 11am until 3:45pm at Lutterell Hall on Church Drive in West Bridgford.
Almost a third of the 99 individual prize-winning entry sections are open to the wider general public.
Known as the Open Classes, they’re made up of a wide range of vegetables, flowers and floral art categories.
There’s also Open Classes for a variety of home produce including cakes, curds, marmalades and chutneys. So, if everyone raves about your baking, why not put it to the test. You never know – it could be a winner.
Organisers are very keen to encourage children up to the age of 14 to enter their own classes by using craft skills to decorate flower pots or fairy cakes, produce a miniature garden, display a small vase of cuts flowers or make an animal, bird or fish made from fruit and vegetable materials.
As always, it’s a panel of formally appointed and qualified judges who assess the entries and make the final decisions. The top three entries in each class win a cash prize. Entries cost 10p but children’s classes are free.
