Magnus Church of England Academy Sixth Form students are reaping the benefits of being paired with top business and education experts who will provide career and interview advice.
Currently the only sixth form provision in Newark, Magnus Church of England Academy says it wants to give its students every chance to succeed.
Head of Sixth Form, Rebecca Sheard, said: “Our aim at Magnus Academy Sixth Form is to ensure all our students leave with as much preparation for their future pathway.
“This includes vital life skills, confidence and the self-belief that they will need to achieve their full potential in todays competitive world.
“The Magnus Mentors scheme will be integral to our aim to engage local and national employers.
“It will allow a professional relationship between students and mentors that can be adapted to meet the unique needs of the students.
“The innovative mentoring scheme will create a rewarding experience for both students and the Magnus Mentors.
“It will shape the future choices of our students and challenge them in new ways to be successful in whatever they choose to pursue.
“We are also pleased to be working with a progression specialist who is supporting our year 13 students on a half-termly basis.
“The programme has focused on a variety of key skills and creating personal statements for their applications to university or a career path of their choice. This is not only supporting their destination choice but is developing their confidence and giving them motivation in their studies so they can achieve their goals.”
Nicola Davis from Nottingham Trent University is participating as a mentor.
“As a Progression Specialist working for the Higher Education Access Network, I have been fortunate to work with a small cohort of sixth-form students on the Access Champions Programme at Magnus Academy,” she said.
“Through a series of one to one mentoring sessions, the programme enables students to receive support, advice and guidance on all aspects of applying to university; in particular writing a successful personal statement.
“The students I have worked with in phase one of this programme have been enthusiastic, motivated and have engaged extremely well with the sessions. I have no doubt they will all secure the destination of their choice post 18.”
