At the beginning of the 2016-17 season, Cotgrave had two teams of 13 players playing in the Under-8 age group in League 1, where games are played five against five.
Following the first couple of games, the Young Elizabeth League agreed to move the team up a year as both sides were deemed too strong for their own age group.
This meant a change in the formation to now playing seven-a-side in the Under-9 age group.
The managers, Paul Heard, Dave Price and Lee Randall, decided that the best way forward was to have a team in both the Saturday and Sunday leagues, using the group of 13 players.
Every child played at least one of the days and some even played both.
Initially the parents were a little apprehensive about the boys playing up a year, but trusted the manager’s decision, who were all confident that the boys would hold their own.
Little did all the managers and parents know that the team would totally exceed anyone’s expectations.
The team of boys, who have all become the greatest of friends, went on to achieve:

– Saturday League 3 Under-9 Spring runners-up

– Sunday League 3 Under-9 Winter runners-up
– Sunday League 3 Under-9 Spring winners
