It’s 60 not out for the popular Gotham Cricket Club.
Established in 1959 with just 20 members, the club now provides opportunities to learn and compete in the game for 96 children aged under 16 and over 40 adults.
Players and visiting teams will launch the 60th celebrations with the annual Arthur Kent Memorial Cricket Festival, held between Sunday 28th July and Friday 2nd August.
The opening match on 28th July pits past and present players in a Club Reunion T20 encounter, with a final charity match on 2nd August raising funds for the British Heart Foundation.
Trevor Burton, chairman of Gotham Village Cricket Club, said: “We have certainly had a great innings in cricketing terms since the first ball was bowled in 1959.
“Today’s success has been built on 60 years of commitment and hard work on the part of volunteer coaches, committees and supporters.
“Our festival this year is a big thank you to them as much as it is about looking ahead to the next 60 years.”
Several former club members have continued sporting prowess in their careers, including Alex Babos who is now on the books at Derby County.
Young rising star Ali Howard has been picked for the Notts U13 County Cricket squad.
Famous cricketers to have graced the Gotham crease over the years include New Zealand international Chris Cairns, former Nottinghamshire player Basher Hassan and Zimbabwean Henry Olonga.
Nottinghamshire captain Steven Mullaney is a frequent visitor and supporter.
The Annual Arthur Kent Festival is the focus of a busy sporting year for the cricket club.
It makes a valuable contribution to club funds and finances two league teams, four junior teams and two Kwik Cricket teams; the Gotham Bats for six year olds and the Gotham Robins for 10 year olds.
The festival opening and closing matches will be held from 3pm, with weekday matches starting at 10:45am.
Lunches, an open bar and nightly BBQ make the festival popular with both villagers and visitors.
The staging of the week-long event has been made possible by the support of several local companies and organisations including Gotham Car Sales, Alan Knight Butchers, Paul Blatherwick Property Services, Crystal Clear Mortgages, PWP Building Services Limited, Robert Whowell & Partners Chartered Accountants, Anray Uphlostery, James Burton Painter & Decorator, C P Walker & Sons Estate Agents, and Lineside Structure Maintenance Limited.
